Manifestation of Jesus to Melvin J. Ballard

In the course of a temple meeting of the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve, January 7, 1919, Melvin J. Ballard related the following: “I remember one testimony, among the many testimonies which I have received. You will pardon me for referring to it. Two years ago about this time, I had been on the Fort Peck Reservation for several days with the brethren, solving the problems connected with our work among the Lamanites. There was no precedent for us to follow, and we just had to go to the Lord and tell Him our troubles, and get inspiration and help from Him. On this occasion I had sought the Lord, under such circumstances, and that night I received a wonderful manifestation and impression which has never left me. I was carried to this place – into this room. I saw myself here with you. I was told there was another privilege that was to be mine; and I was led into a room where I saw, seated on a raised platform, the most glorious being I have ever conceived of, and was taken forward to be introduced to Him. As I approached He smiled, called my name, and stretched out His hands toward me. If I live to be a million years old I shall never forget that smile. He put His arms around me and kissed me, as He took me into His bosom, and He blessed me until my whole being was thrilled. As He finished I fell at His feet, and there saw the marks of the nails; and as I kissed them, with deep joy swelling through my whole being, I felt that I was in heaven indeed. The feeling that came to my heart then was: Oh if I could live worthy, though it would require four-score years, so that in the end when I have finished I could go into His presence and receive the feeling that I then had in His presence, I would give everything that I am and ever hope to be” (Melvin J. Ballard, Crusader for Righteousness, p. 66; also, Marion G. Romney: His Life and Faith, p. 64)

This is one of the things that I wish I knew for sure. "Is Jesus really as kind, loving, caring, friendly, and forgiving as He is portrayed as being in the scriptures?" I hope that He is, but currently, I have no way of knowing for sure. When I stand before Him at the judgment day, will He really forgive me for all the crap I have done, especially since I have re-thought things and tried to repent and change my ways for the better? Some of the people around me aren't willing to forgive me, and I sometimes wonder if He is one of them.

I think another thing that would be helpful to know for sure is whether Jesus truly rose from the dead or not. I hope He did, but I don't know if He did. I currently have no way of knowing for sure. But if He really did rise from the dead, that's a real game-changer there! If He can rise from the dead into immortality and eternal life, then that means that you and I can do so as well, if we gain access to the same source that He had access to. For now, the best I can do is to operate on faith and hope that Joseph Smith is telling us the truth whenever Joseph tells us that He has seen and talked with a resurrected Jesus Christ and a resurrected Moroni.

If the Book of Mormon is true and Jesus really did appear to the people on the American Continent after his ascension into heaven, then that means that Jesus Christ really did rise from the dead and really is God Our Savior. It also means that Jesus really does love us, all of us. I hope it is true, but I have no way of knowing for sure.
